SolarEnergy-TrueLifeExperience

How it all Started
After 35 years of hard work as a IT Manager and Consultant in Canada and in the international market, my wife and I, decided to live our retirement in Costa Rica, where we have managed to build our house in the jungle facing the Pacific ocean on the SW area of this beautiful country.

Energy Needs Fulfillment
We have known in advance, that due to the limitations of the urban development on the area, consider traditional electricity energy was out of the question just too expensive to install in the mountain.

Solar Panels Energy was adopted as the solution, three 19.5 by 37 inches Solar Panels were brought with us from Montreal as part of our baggage as well as a charge controller an a converter.

Six 12 volts deep cycle batteries and cables were bought in San Jose.

Solar Panels Installation
The architecture of the roof, was designed to capture the air currants coming from the ocean or the mountain in order to ventilate the building without the use of air conditioning or fans, thisS presented a serious problem.

It is well known, that solar panels efficiency is obtained when the energy producer panels are exposed as much as possible to the sun light......that was impossible to obtain, due to our specific roof structure.

We decided that the needed structure to allow us a maximum exposure should provide the functionality to allow the balanced up-down of the solar panels mounts of at least 300 degrees with a horizontal displacement of 360 degrees...not an easy task.....not true...believe me.. it was easy...take a look:

What Needs This Solar Energy System Fulfilled
This easy to build structure, provided us with the necessary flexibility to adjust the solar panels as needed and obtain that way the maximum of efficiency and efficacy.

This small Solar Panels Powered System provided energy during four years to a:

- Four 13 by 19 feet bed rooms;
- Four Bath rooms;
- One 9 by 13 feet kitchen;
- Two service toilets;
- A radio tape recorder;
- A portable PC;
- A observatory;
- A thirteen by nineteen feet dining-living room;

I must mention, that 40% of the 4 years long, experience, only two people lived in the domain, 8 to twelve people lived the rest of the time.

Solar Panels System Required Maintenance
Laughable...two hours off time were dedicated every two weeks to test and fill up with purified water the deep cycle solar energy batteries, of course batteries cell tips were cleaned to avoid acid rust and bad contacts.

Solar Energy Experience Conclusion
. The choice of Solar Panels Energy, was the good one, because of the low cost to acquire and the minimal effort required to maintain;
. It is almost a no brain solution, to learn about it, to implement, to install and to maintain;
. It is an under continuous development solution, where millions of dollars are invested in order to improve a much better non expensive an efficient technology.

In a more personal aspect, after 35 years of marriage, were, despite happiness, life had became kind of always the same, this experience has provided us with a more exciting and healthy way of existence, we had to re learn to love and respect nature, conviviality with a variety of monkeys, toucans, reptiles, snakes, wild pigs, opossums, parrots etc had became our normal way of life.

In our daily walks on the jungle mountain trails it was not surprise anymore to see jaguars or black panthers or other medium size cats populating the jungle.....what a beautiful experience further more, the loosing of 50 pounds of weight by the physical efforts, the rain forest humidity and pure oxygen has strongly rejuvenated our body and senses.

Back home again in Montreal, I'm now making the necessary to start equipping our new house with Solar Panels technology, and prepare for our true retirement in three years.
